Speakers

John Teter

Rev. Dr. John Teter will be the Bible expositor at Staff Conference 20 (SC20). He is a former InterVarsity staff and an IVP author of The Power of the 72 (2017), Get the Word Out (2003), and Jesus & the Hip-Hop Prophets (2003, coauthored with Alex Gee). John is a biracial Korean-Dutch American, and he currently serves as Senior Pastor of Fountain of Life Covenant Church, a 13-year-old urban church plant in Long Beach, California. John and his wife, Becky, live in Long Beach with their three children.

 

 

Robel Chemeda

Robel Chemeda is the General Secretary of EvaSUE, the IFES movement in Ethiopia. EvaSUE is the fastest-growing student movement in the IFES family, and with more than 45,000 students involved, it is also one of the largest.  The EvaSue movement employs 70 staff and sees around 3,500 people turn to Christ each year.  Robel joined EvaSUE in 2005 as part-time staff while he was a lecturer at BahirDar University.  In 2012 Robel served as head of the Associates’ Ministry Department with EvaSUE working with graduates and volunteers, and in 2015 Robel began his role as General Secretary of EvaSUE.  Robel was married to Tsehay (Kb) in 2017.

 

 

Paula Fuller

Paula Fuller is InterVarsity’s Executive Vice President of People and Culture.  She joined the staff of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship in 2005, after serving as a volunteer for seven years. Paula has served in full-time vocational ministry since 1996, first as the Director of Outreach and Development at Abundant Life Christian Fellowship in Menlo Park, CA and in 2001 as the Pastor of Business Operations. Prior to joining the ministry of Abundant Life Fellowship, Paula worked in the banking and telecommunications industries in the areas of risk management, business development, marketing and strategy. Paula and her husband Philip live in California.

 

 

Tom Lin

Tom is an InterVarsity alumnus from Harvard University, the son of Taiwanese immigrants, and the first full president to be chosen from InterVarsity staff. He planted new student chapters at Harvard and Boston University, helped establish an evangelical student movement in Mongolia, led InterVarsity’s ministry in the Central Region of the U.S. as the Regional Director, and served as Vice President of Missions and Director of the Urbana Student Missions Conference from 1994 to 2016.  Tom has served on many boards including Wycliffe Bible Translators, Missio Nexus, and Fuller Theological Seminary.  Tom, his wife Nancy, and their two daughters live in Madison, Wisconsin.

 

 

Serene Neddenriep

Serene Neddenriep has served with InterVarsity for a combined 19 years, as a new believer, student leader, Campus Staff, community college planter, and coach and trainer in the planting cohort. She co-wrote Start Something New and the Holy Spirit on Campus handbook, and co-created the Ambition conference's Greenhouse, where students' planting visions are cultivated and resourced to become a reality. She currently serves as InterVarsity’s Assistant Director of Chapter Planting and leads the National Council of Revival Leadership for InterVarsity.  Serene was recently ordained as a Foursquare minister and serves on her church's preaching team.  Serene is multi-racial Chinese, German, English and Irish and lives in San Diego, with her husband Jonathan and their three tiny crazy boys.  

 

Sanford "Sandy" Shugart

Dr. Sanford “Sandy” Shugart, an InterVarsity alumnus, has served as the president of Valencia College in greater Orlando, Florida since 2000.  Valencia has received the Aspen Prize for Excellence and is the third largest community college in Florida serving about 70,000 students.  Valencia is known for high rates of graduation, transfer, and job placement and has been influential in best practices of learning-centered education on a national level.  Prior to Valencia, Sandy served as president of North Harris College and as Vice President and Chief Academic Officer of the North Carolina Community College System.  He earned his Ph.D. in Teaching and Learning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  In addition to his accomplishments in academia, Sandy is also a poet, singer/songwriter, and author of Leadership in the Crucible of Work: Discovering the Interior Life of an Authentic Leader.

Emcees

Stacy Rafferty

Stacy Rafferty is one of the National Directors of Diversity at InterVarsity.  Prior to this role she served on campuses in Southern California and Nebraska as a CSM and Area Director.  Stacy has experience planting multi-ethnic communities and is on the LaFe Leadership team.  Stacy and her husband, Eric, currently live in Nebraska where they helped to replant InterVarsity ministry in 2009, at a time when there were no chapters in Nebraska.  Eric and Stacy have three amazing kids.

 

 

Smiley Abrams

Jason “Smiley” Abrams currently serves as the Area Director for the Gulf and River Area (the state of Mississippi, Memphis, & West Florida). He began his journey with InterVarsity as a volunteer planting the HBCU Jackson State University in 2008. Since then he has served as a CSM, Team Leader, AAD, on the Urbana 12 Performing Arts Team, and currently serves as the national BCM Evangelism Champion as well as on the Underserved Institution Council developing plans for planting on HBCUs. Smiley has written over 300 poems and produced a spoken word album entitled “3:13 AM” available on all streaming services. He probably loves Star Trek as much as he loves Star Wars and Marvel movies as much as he loves DC TV shows.
